New Member FAQs

When do your sessions run?

Shout Sister sessions are twenty weeks long and run from September to January, and February to June. There is generally a two week break over the winter holidays and then a long break over the summer. To see what day and time each chapter meets, take a look at our chapter information here.

Can I join late?

Absolutely! New members are welcome to join at any point during the session. You may need to spend a little extra time catching up on our material though, since we have a very extensive repertoire of songs. Fees may be prorated to reflect the date of joining.

How much does membership cost?

A full session of Shout Sister costs $160 for 20 weeks. There are two sessions per year. New members will also pay a one-time account setup fee of $25 which grants access to our online materials and the song catalog for their chapter.

How do I pay my dues?

Payment can be made by e-transfer to payshoutsisterdues@gmail.com or a cheque can be mailed to:

What if I’m not ready to commit? Can I just try it out?

Every potential new member of Shout Sister is welcome to a free drop-in rehearsal to get a feel for how we operate. Just pick the chapter closest to you and come sing with us! There’s no need to commit until you know that we’re a good fit for you, and we’re pretty sure that one practice will convince you.

Do I need to have any training or experience?

Shout Sister’s philosophy is all about getting women together to sing and feel good. That’s it. We don’t hold auditions and there’s no need to have any experience with choral singing or musical theory. We believe that a variety of voices makes for a rich musical experience so everybody is welcome and celebrated.

How do I learn the music if it’s not written down?

All of our songs are recorded to sing along with at home. All you need is a computer, tablet, or phone to access the music, which can be downloaded for offline access.

What do I need to bring with me to choir?

Mostly you’ll just need water! You should probably also print out your lyric sheets, you’ll need them regularly until you’ve mastered all of the songs.

What else should I know for my first Shout Sister experience?

Shout Sister is committed to providing a safe and uplifting musical experience for women; this includes trans women and nonbinary folk. We are an inclusive group and if that’s uncomfortable for you, we may not be the right choir for you to join.

Also,we are a scent-free choir so please don’t wear perfume or any products with strong fragrances.
